JOB SUMMARY: The Paramedic maintains supplies and provides assistance with the care of the emergency patients of all ages including neonatal, adolescent, pediatric, adult, and geriatrics. Works under the supervision and direction of the licensed nurse or physician. Paramedics may monitor ICU patients, transport ICU patients and take EMS report from the ambulance phone.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
2. Current BLS certification upon hire or obtain within 30 days.
3. Previous experience in an acute care hospital preferred.
4. Behavioral violence prevention certification as required.
5. Paramedic or Nurse Tech preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs and understands phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures, including patient preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens.
2. Reports all unusual incidents to the appropriate person. Reports significant changes in patient’s condition to ED RN/MD.
3. Assists with patient teaching within the scope of knowledge as directed by the licensed nurse.
4. Demonstrates the ability to accurately determine patient’s vital signs. Charts appropriate data within the scope of practice.
5. Utilizes hospital equipment and supplies appropriately.
6. Consistently uses two patient identifiers when performing any procedure on a patient.
7. Consistently ensures that all clinical alarms are not turned off or silenced without the RN knowledge.
8. Is in compliance with information contained within the Infection Control Manual (i.e. OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines) and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment ( i.e. gloves, masks, goggles ) and good hand washing techniques
9. Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit / facility.
10. Explains all treatment and procedures thoroughly to patient before they are performed. Involves patient in care and allows patient to have choice and control over situations and environment, as appropriate to condition and situation.
11. Performs a 12 Lead Electrocardiogram accurately and according to written procedures. Must be trained to work with all age groups in Electrocardiography for services including: Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric patients.
12. Performs CLIA waived testing as assigned to the ED.
13. Copies charts and other appropriate information when patient is transferred to another facility. Assists with the admission and transfer or discharge of patients and their medical records.
14. Acts as receptionist for unit and uses proper telephone etiquette and communicates with all other departments in a courteous manner. Replenishes and maintains necessary forms on patient charts as needed with proper patient identification. Copies forms or information as necessary.
15. Performs and monitors local applications of heat (thermotherapy) and cold (cryotherapy). Applies splits, knee immobilizers, ace bandages as directed. Assists physician/MLP with cast application. Fitting of crutches and instructions on crutch walking. Cleaning of simple wounds and application of dressing.
16. Performs and reports glucoscan blood sugars as directed by the RN. Performs quality control check according to hospital quality and procedure.
17. Maintain regular attendance.
18. All other duties as assigned or required.
